Congratulations! Your scores show that you’ve already got the foundations in place for a successful Vegan transition. The next step is to crystallise ‘what’ you need to do, and ‘how’ you’ll go about doing it, to ensure that it’s a success from the start. If you’ve already gone Vegan, then the numbers reflect that you’ve got room for improvement. Moving to a healthy plant-based lifestyle is one of the best ways to wake up every day to a better quality of life, and there’s never been a better time to make the transition. But to get the most out of it, your scores reveal that there are some things that we can improve upon (see below).

Build Your Strategy to make Veganism blend into your existing lifestyle.

In the section below I expand upon the 3 keys areas needed for an effective Vegan transition, with some tips for immediate improvements – based on your scores.

Mindset

Your mindset is your will-power, your why-power, and your mental readiness to achieve the goal. You will have a much easier time transitioning to a Vegan lifestyle if you’re committed to making it a success, than if you take a half-hearted approach. It all starts with getting clear on your ‘why’. There are 3 main reasons why people choose to go Vegan, and they are:

Better health and quality of life.

Ethics – The reality of how the animals used for our food and products are mistreated, and the methods used for their slaughter.

Environment – the devastating and unsustainable effects of animal agriculture on the environment.

People’s reasons for going Vegan vary, and your reasons will be personal to you.  It doesn’t matter what your reason is for going Vegan, what matters is that you have one. A strong ‘why’ will keep you on track when you’re in situations of temptation, or when your veganism is challenged by others (the frustrating part of moving to a plant-based lifestyle). Whether it’s all three, or maybe just one or two, be clear on what this reason is for you. For most people, seeing the horror that goes on in a slaughterhouse to put meat on their plate is reason enough. For others, it’s more about health: the consumption of animal products has been shown to contribute to all the leading killer diseases. A natural plant-based diet is best for long-term health. To ensure you’re driven to stay on track, have an image in your head that embodies your ‘why’, that you can easily refer to.

ACTION STEP:

Develop a crystal clear image in your mind that embodies your ‘why’ for going Vegan.

In the 5 Step How To Go Vegan Masterclass, I suggest a number of resources covering Ethics, Health and Environment that are invaluable for developing an immediate and compelling ‘why’.

Strategy

Any lifestyle change needs to be well thought through, well prepared for, and implemented effectively. If it’s not, then it’s unlikely to lead to lasting change or a better quality of life. So many times I’ve heard people say ‘I tried going Vegan but it didn’t work out’. Upon asking further questions, it became clear that the reason for this is because they were lacking a strategy to make it a success.

The best way to go plant-based is to make it fit into your existing lifestyle. We do this by taking a look at what our habits and preferences are when it comes to food and lifestyle.  Much better to add-in healthy new options to a lifestyle that already works for you, than to try and reinvent the wheel. If you decide to go Vegan, but have no idea what you’re actually going to eat, it’s unlikely to leave you satisfied for very long. If you’ve got an unsupportive circle of people around you, you’ll constantly be on the defensive which will wear you down.

On a side-note, by far the most difficult thing about going Vegan is dealing with those around you who criticise your choice. It’s not uncommon for friends, family and spouses to take offence to your decision. Therefore it’s important to be prepared for this and to set expectations about what you will and will not except from those around you, right from the start.

 ACTION STEP:

Think about your current lifestyle, habits and preferences, and then get clear on the following:

  • Meals that you would like to try upon going Vegan.
  • When you’ll prepare these meals – batch cooking in advance or at the time of eating.
  • When you’ll buy your food for the week so that you’re always well stocked.
  • Enjoyable snacks that you can have on hand for when you get hungry whilst on the go (fruit, nuts, plant-based snack-bars).
  • What you’ll do if your friends are going to a restaurant that doesn’t have Vegan options (this is less often the case these days due to the explosion of mainstream veganism, but still something that should be taken into consideration).

Steps 3 and 4 of the 5 Step How To Go Vegan Masterclass are dedicated to developing your strategy to going Vegan. It includes a 7 day meal plan that I created for Women’s Running Magazine, which contains 35 different options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, deserts and snacks. You can gain free access to the course by clicking on the button below:

Implementation

This is where you get down to action and start investing in a better you. Within the first few days of going fully Vegan people usually report an improved feeling of health and well-being. Over months, the change can be remarkable. Going Vegan is just as much about enjoying a better quality of life for yourself, as it is about making a positive impact in the world. By taking action and implementing your strategy, not only will you start experiencing the benefits from Day 1, but you’ll also gather data about what is working well for you and what could be improved. This enables you to make improvements to your diet and lifestyle as you go and continuously optimise the process.

A crystal clear ‘why’ and a well thought through strategy make implementation a breeze.  Effective implementation is what leads to a better quality of life. It’s as simple as that, and all it takes is just one step forward at a time.

ACTION STEP:

Implementation is all about taking action, so the recommended 2 next steps are as follows:
